Childhood Memories

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

We all love to reminise about our childhood and how the sun always shone, the holidays were endless & Tucker was the coolest guy at Grange Hill. One of the topics, often with friends, about our childhood is sweets! We can spend many a moment reminising about sherbet dib dabs, black jacks, refreshers and drumstick lollies. I think my favourite were refresher chews which had a shot of sherbet in the middle but I also loved nothing more than going to the shop and getting a ‘quarter’ of something. There before your eyes was heaven on a shelf, with just row upon row of loose sweets waiting for you to choose them.

Throughout the past couple of years one of our best selling items, especially at Christmas has been our retro sweets hampers, which we offer in either a Superman or Wonder Woman tin.  People love to give a gift which will evoke memories of their childhood and both the sweets and the tin fulfill this. We are introducing another retro hamper this Christmas with the very iconic Union Jack tin.

All That’s British Canvas

Friday, October 8th, 2010

Here at the gifted penguin we love a young and exciting company called More Than Words which produce the most amazing bespoke artwork using typographic images. The work they produce is of the highest fine art standard and is printed onto pure cotton canvas with a museum quality mount. We decided we would love them to produce a piece of art that would be unique to us at the gifted penguin. With the Olympics being just around the corner, the ongoing love of the Union Jack in interiors and a desire to celebrate all that Britain means to us in these challenging times we decided to commission a piece of work that reflected these thoughts. We brain stormed words that reflected all that’s British asking all sorts of people and the most popular answer we got was ‘the weather’! But many other favourites rolled in including cream teas, Big Ben, red buses, Marks & Spencers and many name places including Edinburgh, Cardiff, Stratford upon Avon and of course London. With our list of words we then asked Lisa Long at More Than Words to produce a unique piece of art for us. The canvas was produced using using UV archival pigment inks in the exact colours of the Union Jack and what we received is a stunning piece of art, All That’s British Union Jack Canvas.

This stunning piece of art can’t be bought anywhere else, so why not treat yourself to something that will bring interest and enjoyment to all who view it. Why not see if your favourite British icon is in there?!

Spotted

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Well we have been busy spotting a few items this week and on BBC2 The Great British Bake Off was awash with our products. When I could take my eyes off of the scrummy biscuits and scones I spied the Emma Bridgewater Union Jack Biscuit Barrel, the Emma Ball Designer Tea Time Tin Biscuit Barrel, the Emma Ball Tea Time Biscuit Tins and Emma Bridgewater Hearts Cake Tins. All are such fabulous and gorgeous tins for storing all those scrummy and cakes.

British Sandwich Week

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

I love all these national weeks that occur during the year and as a sandwich lover I raise a wholemeal triangle in recognition of the ‘British Sandwich Week’ which is from 9th-15th May.

They are definitely a well loved British institution which should be celebrated with a round of cucumber sandwiches. The fourth Earl Of Sandwich gave his name to this British lunchtime, teatime, in fact anytime tradition in 1762 and we’ve been munching away ever since.

The joy of a sandwich is you can make it as healthy and wholesome as you like or the complete opposite and expose yourself to the delights of peanut butter, chocolate spread and bacon. Oh the joy of a bacon sandwich….yum…sorry I was lost in my thoughts there for a moment!

The second crucial thing in a sandwich is the transportation of said item to school, to work, to your picnic and so on. We’ve got a large range of lunch boxes available especially for children of which The Gruffalo Tin Lunch Box and Dinosaur Tin Lunch Box are two of the favourites.  Little girls love the Gisela Graham Fairy Tea Party Lunch Bag and the Emma Bridgewater Dancing Mice Lunch Box. For the adults the Union Jack Tin Lunch Box is popular along with the Emma Ball Designer Tea Time Lunch Tin.

Fly The Flag

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

We’ve just had some gorgeous pure linen products arrive which would be ideal for the man in your life. The wash bag, key ring and shoe bag are all hand finished and are very on trend with the iconic Union Jack design. The shoe bag and wash bag are ideal for those buisness meetings away from home or for the next holiday. The wash bag has a waterproof lining to deal with those loose caps (!) and the shoe bag with its drawstring pull will protect your clothes from being marked.

So lets fly the flag whilst we wait for the UK to get flying again!

New Arrivals

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Gisela Graham have just launched a range of items with a new take on the union jack theme. The pin memo board, the doorstops and the tea cosies are bringing a little country chic to the union jack with their vintage style pretty florals, stripes and hearts. A little softer on the eye than the traditional red, white and blue.
