Give Contemporary Gifts

July 1st, 2011

Gifts are traditionally associated with birthdays, Christmas and other holidays. However a gift is just as well received without reason or occasion. Some people enjoy giving them just to see the smile on the recipients face. These days there are a wide range of funky and novelty ideas to give people.

One popular trend these days are photo and personalised gifts. This makes a great present as it allows you to personalize it, giving the recipient something truly special and unique.

Some people like eco-friendly gifts, whether they have been made ethically or they use fewer resources and energy.  These gifts are perfect as they often look funky and different. There are a wide range of items to choose from, whether it be recycled gift boxes, handmade clay pots and ornaments or other handmade presents. The advantage of this way is that you are giving them something special and unique.

You can find what you’re looking for without even leaving your home! You can choose from a wide range of products in different sizes, styles and colours, to suit the person you’re giving it to! You can even shop through different brands; there are a wide number of top brands and designers that produce great gift ideas and artworks.Fair Trade Handcrafted Woollen Elephant

Stamp your mark on your home.

I don’t know if it’s the Royal Wedding factor but the Queen and her entourage do seem to be back in fashion following some rather dodgy years in the wilderness. This is being translated not just into celebrations and bank hoildays but also into interiors with cushions, artwork, fabrice etc having a regal theme. When we spotted these absolutely stunning stamp rugs we just knew they would be extremely popular. That popularity had definitely been enhanced with Alan Carr’s programme Chatty Man having one of the 1p rugs adorning the studio floor.

Each Stamp Rug is hand knotted by highly skilled weavers in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal, giving you a unique piece of art. The rugs are woven onto cotton warps and wefts and are made from 100% New Zealand wool. Initially the looms have to be specially made for each different size rug. The high quality wool is then spun and dyed using aniline colours, which produce depth and clarity in the finished product. Finally, the weavers dexterously hand knot each unique rug from prepared graph paper images. The culmination of the weavers’ experience combined with the highest quality materials creates the perfect hand made rug.

Used as a conventional rug or hung on a wall for an alternative look, the Queen’s Head Stamp Rug is the ultimate majestic design statement. The scalloped edge design reflects the postage stamp and the hand woven work produces a 3D effect.

My Joy In Gardening

May 24th, 2011

I took to gardening when I was in my early thirties when a friend suggested it might help me to relax when I was under a lot of stress. I really didn’t know where to begin but she very gradually introduced me to the basics and donated some of her cuttings and divided plants and away I went. I became hooked very quickly and found weeding to be one of the most therapeutic elements of gardening. You can’t beat hoeing out those little critters that try to dominate my rather lovely if somewhat haphazard borders. As I have moved house twice, since I’ve taken up gardening, it has been hard each time letting go of the memories that each garden brings but as soon as I have arrived at a new house I have set to creating new memories.  Another love that has developed from this is visiting gardens and some of my favourite visits have been to The Chelsea Flower Show,  The Eden Project, Sissinghurst Castle ( go in the spring for the daffodils),   Alnwick Castle Gardens  & RHS Garden Harlow Carr. My favourite plant…hmm…that’s a tough call. I think it has to be daffodils.  The first daffodils are always heartwarming after a bleak cold winter & I love the idea of Spring being just around the corner.

A Blog Brickwall

May 10th, 2011

I have for the past few weeks sat at my computer thinking I really should update my blog and hunted around in the darkest dustiest corners of my brain for inspiration. What shall I write about, the Royal Wedding maybe?, the latest arrivals at the gifted penguin?, thoughts on the economic impact for small retailers over the past year? These are a few of the ideas I toyed with but none seemed the right thing. Advise from fellow bloggers and social media sights included just be your self, share who you are, talk about the things that interest you. I could tell you I am married with 5 children (3 from my first marriage & two step children), I love modern art, lattes, reading…..actually this is sounding a little too much like a personal ad! So I have run into a brickwall but have decided to just sit with my brickwall for a while and will either smash it down with a superb posting later or I could gradually dismantle my wall brick by brick over the coming days with snippets of thoughts and ideas. Anyway let me leave you for now with a few images.

The Gift for Mother’s Day

March 29th, 2011

Sunday 3rd April is when we as a nation say ‘thanks Mum’ and many a mum will receive burnt toast & cold cups of tea in bed. As a mum of adult children I miss those Mother Day treats in bed but do love the type of gifts I receive now. To be honest my favourite gift is either a book or a bunch of daffodils. In my opinion nothing says Mother’s Day more than a bunch of daffodils. I also, like many people, find Mother’s Day quite a sad day as my mother died quite young when I was in my early twenties and the day brings sadness as I reflect on all the time I never got to spend with her as an adult woman. I was just coming into adulthood when she died and our relationship was changing at this time and being a young mother at that time seemed to compound the grief as I looked at my children and realised not only would they never have her as a grandma who they could remember but also they too would one day be facing life without me. I don’t want to be maudling in this post but I just want to say don’t forget the daffodils or whatever it is that makes your mum smile but most of all don’t forget to give her a hug and tell her you love her. However complex our relationships are with our mother one day we will all miss them.

Beautiful & Fair Trade Certified

March 15th, 2011

We are very excited to bring the design company En Gry & Sif to the gifted penguin. Beautiful hand made fair trade products which are designed in Denmark and made in Nepal.

The wool used in the making of each product comes from New Zealand and when the raw wool arrives in Nepal, it is coloured with eco-friendly dyes. The beads, sequins etc are sourced at the local markets in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. All of the products are made by hand and the amazing skill and dexterity shines through every product which being handmade will vary very slightly from each other. These items are all certified by the World Fair Trade Organisation.

Bring out the bunting, Spring is here.

March 1st, 2011

I love bunting! There I’ve said it. People who know me well will definitely not put me down as a bunting girl as I am a very unfrilly, uncluttered, practical type. The only things that clutter my life are books and artwork but there is something about bunting I can’t resist.

I think maybe it makes me think of Spring & Summer, celebrations, street parties and I suppose all of those things are full of positive images and connotations.  The new double sided bunting that we are selling is not only gorgeous but also very eco friendly as it uses recycled paper and is dyed using soy ink, thereby reducing the impact on the environment. And the pick of the bunch has to be the wildflower bunting as I just love the idea that once you have used it maybe for a very special occasion such as a wedding, birth, anniversary or Christening you can plant the bunting in the ground and wildflowers will grow back as a reminder of that special time.

The bunting is all handmade and so each piece will be unique to you. I can’t wait for the celebrations to begin!
