Countdown to Christmas

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

An Advent calendar is a special calendar which is used to count down the 24 days to Christmas and its origins were based in the Christian faith but are equally in use as a secular means to mark the days to the festive celebration.

Most advent calendars are made for children and take the form of a large rectangular card with many “windows”, one of which is opened every day during Advent. Behind each window is often a chocolate item or a very small gift.

The German Lutherans at the beginning of the 19th Century are believed to have been the originators of the Advent calendar, and would simply draw a chalk line on the door at the beginning of the day throughout December. Some other families would light a candle and this tradition is still observed by some people.

Many of today’s Advent calendars are mass produced by the big confectionery companies but some people prefer a perpetual calendar they can use year after year.

Orla Kiely

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Orla Kiely is a fashion designer whose now instantly recognisable prints have appeared on handbags, accessories and homewares throughout her 20 year career span.

Kiely takes inspiration from the geometry she sees in nature and her unique designs are where colour, pattern, graphic control, texture and rhythm continually work and rework together.

We have stocked a number of her mugs in our shop for sometime but it’s her new range of stationery which has really caught our eye this autumn. Her repetitive patterns translate very well onto the notebooks, address book and her storage boxes.  What a gorgeous way to store your CDs and DVDs.

Morph has arrived

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

I suppose it’s my age but I do love a bit of nostalgia especially around my childhood  so I loved the new Morph products that have just arrived. Morph is an animated plasticine character that first appeared on our tv screens in 1977, in Take Hart. Morph lived in an artist’s wooden pencil box and was later joined by his friend Chas who was the naughtier character of the two. Morph just spoke goobledygook but his gestures conveyed all that we needed to understand.

I love all the Morph products but I think my favourite has to be the Morph Bookends as it combines my love of nostalgia and books! My colleague has already treated herself to a Morph Desk Buddy which now sits with pride of place next to her computer and faithfully holds her pen!

Childhood Memories

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

We all love to reminise about our childhood and how the sun always shone, the holidays were endless & Tucker was the coolest guy at Grange Hill. One of the topics, often with friends, about our childhood is sweets! We can spend many a moment reminising about sherbet dib dabs, black jacks, refreshers and drumstick lollies. I think my favourite were refresher chews which had a shot of sherbet in the middle but I also loved nothing more than going to the shop and getting a ‘quarter’ of something. There before your eyes was heaven on a shelf, with just row upon row of loose sweets waiting for you to choose them.

Throughout the past couple of years one of our best selling items, especially at Christmas has been our retro sweets hampers, which we offer in either a Superman or Wonder Woman tin.  People love to give a gift which will evoke memories of their childhood and both the sweets and the tin fulfill this. We are introducing another retro hamper this Christmas with the very iconic Union Jack tin.

Accessories make a house a home.

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

You’ve just finished decorating your house, it’s almost how you dreamed it would be, but you can’t shake that niggling feeling that something is missing. What do you need? …A collection of modern home accessories. Why? To give your home a touch of absolute loveliness!

Home accessories will add character and charm to the dullest of decorated rooms. They allow you to personalise your space, making your home trendy, tasteful and beautifully unique. Quite often, a contemporary home accessory is considered more necessary than the decor itself. Of course the colour scheme and interior design of your home is important but it’s the modest added features that give your home that little bit more… the ‘S’ factor (well, the style factor.)

With a delightful range of home accessories to choose from, you will have no problem making your house, a welcoming home. From modern door stops to door mats and quirky cushions to coat racks, your home will ooze so much style that even your neighbours will be envious!

You could decorate your house with artistic canvases or photo frames; it’s surprising how much life and colour a single feature can bring to a room. To create the ultimate design with home accessories you could try hanging smaller pictures or prints in a bundle to fashion an artistic wall arrangement. Very chic!

Even the smallest of accessories can affect the appeal of your house, coasters for example. Some may argue that coasters provide little more than protection for your furniture; a truly house-proud goddess would argue that they are another must needed accessory which helps prettify your home. Check out these gorgeous Paua Shell handbag and shoes coasters…it’s the little touches that count!

There are an endless amount of ideas online to help characterise your home, so if you’re looking to turn your uninspiring house into an ‘oh-so-fabulous’ home then visit the  gifted penguin today!

Name Art

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Have you, like me, on numerous occasions thought what can I give as a newborn gift, or a christening gift that’s unique and something really special and guaranteed to bring a huge smile to the recipient’s face. Well your quest is at an end with our discovery of a new talented artist who is producing gorgeous artwork for children.

Charis Slade came up with the idea of producing such unique personalised artwork when she was trying to source some fabulous artwork for her own children’s bedrooms and after drawing a blank decided to create something herself. Following the making of these early pieces Charis started to make and give these as gifts for friends which attracted such a positive response her business was launched and as the saying goes the rest is history!

From her studio near Bath she started by creating gifts for newborns incorporating their names into striking images of teddies, toys and animals, and this has continued to expand incorporating a variety of personalised gifts. All her artwork is hand drawn and adapted to the customers requirements and so no two pieces are alike.

We know you will love these beautiful pieces of high quality art as much as we do, and how thrilled will your friends and family be when they receive such a unique gift.
