Countdown to Christmas

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

An Advent calendar is a special calendar which is used to count down the 24 days to Christmas and its origins were based in the Christian faith but are equally in use as a secular means to mark the days to the festive celebration.

Most advent calendars are made for children and take the form of a large rectangular card with many “windows”, one of which is opened every day during Advent. Behind each window is often a chocolate item or a very small gift.

The German Lutherans at the beginning of the 19th Century are believed to have been the originators of the Advent calendar, and would simply draw a chalk line on the door at the beginning of the day throughout December. Some other families would light a candle and this tradition is still observed by some people.

Many of today’s Advent calendars are mass produced by the big confectionery companies but some people prefer a perpetual calendar they can use year after year.

Congratulations to Laura Roberts who won last month’s competition for the Karlsson clock. This months competition is for a gorgeous Catherine Colebrook apron. Catherine designs and makes beautiful top quality items and this apron is no exception. Made from high quality, machine washable, 100% thick cotton it not only looks lovely but will last for many years. Made in the UK. Catherine’s work always makes you smile with her amusing observations on the everyday and this is no exception, ‘Cake is for Life not just for Christmas’!

Puppy Joy

Friday, November 5th, 2010

It’s really beginning to get very busy here with people already buying their Christmas gifts. So why we decided to introduce a puppy into the melee at this point I have no idea! Custard, a gorgeous Cockapoo, has been introduced to life at the gifted penguin this week and he’s fitted in beautifully. He started on Monday morning and has proved a massive hit with the staff, the delivery men, reps, the postman and anyone who has popped in this week. He has brought a great deal of joy already and loves meeting so many interesting and varied people.

We don’t want to become puppy bores but we thought you might like to meet him!
